30 Days of Beauty: Day 18

B….is for Blueberries!!

The letter “B” is the letter that Keagan is studying in class this week and it happens to be the letter that my main interest for this week begins with.

I’ve been doing some research and checking into a local nursery in Ellijay, GA and I believe this fall we are going to attempt to order/plant/grow/and then eventually pick some blueberries of our own. I never realized how many varieties of blueberries there were until I really started looking into it. I just thought a blueberry was a blueberry. Our family is really excited about this new gardening adventure. Aaron loves to pick them straight from the bush and it them….If I have any left after that point, I’m really looking forward to making home-made blueberry pancakes, muffins, and fruit salads. This will be just one more food resource that we will be able to supply on our own without having to worry about where the food came from and whats been put on it.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I need a farm. 🙂

  1. Hey Jessica, I read where you are looking at a nusery in Ellajay, GA. I buy all my plants from johnsonnusery.com located in Ellajay. Great company and great people and service. They are located about on the same latitude as we are so I figured their plants would do well here also, which they have. When you look at their websit they have several combinations of blueberry plants, you need at least two different plants to fertilize each other. I picked three plants that would produce at different times so you can spread your harvest out. The picture in the top right side of the screen are LARGE speckled butter beans. My mother grew these and I have in the past, can’t buy them in the store.

  2. That is exactly where I’ve been looking, Elam. I got the name of the nursery from Maggie…Well she remembered it was Johnson something and somewhere in GA that started with an E….So I put two and two together. 🙂 They do look like a great place to get the blueberry bushes from. It said they won’t be shipping them out until Oct. so now I will just sit and wait patiently. I’m glad you’re reading my blog! 🙂 Any input on our garden and everything else is always appreciated. Have a great day!! Oh, do you remember what three species of blueberry’s you have?

  3. Do you remember you Dad’s Sour Cream Blueberry pancakes? He makes them from scratch. Dillon SAeed had them growing behind the office. He picked them and brought home a big bucket full every year. He doesn’t make them so often anymore, but when he makes them, he makes a bunch and I freeze them on a cookie sheet and then transfer them to a gallon baggie…you can warm them up in the toaster! The recipe is NOT in my cookbook (which haven’t mailed) but I will send it to you…maybe tonight when we get home …..

  4. I do remember those…Yum yum! I can’t wait to make those for my family-because I will! 🙂
